Davidson Readers

Through the Davidson Reads program, Davidson College students volunteer to provide free one-on-one read-alouds and literacy tutoring to local students.

VIP Read-Aloud Model
In the fall, Davidson College students utilize Read Charlotte’s VIP Read-Aloud Model while working with preschoolers to help build their comprehension skills, focusing on vocabulary, inference, and perspective taking. Tutoring sessions are held at the Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center twice a week. 

Queen City Readers
In the spring, Davidson College students work with kindergarten and first-grade students from local elementary school Davidson K-8 using Read Charlotte’s Queen City Readers curriculum to build word reading skills. Tutoring sessions are held at Temple Kol Tikvah (approximately a 15-minute walk from campus) twice a week. 

Over the course of the spring 2025 semester, students receiving the Queen City Readers tutoring demonstrated growth by 69% on phoneme segmentation, 75% on decoding, and 251% on encoding according to their pre- and post-test scores.

• Look out for flyers posted around campus at the beginning of each semester with more information.
• Tutors will all go through a concise orientation and training to prepare to work with students.
