A deep cultural understanding and knowledge of the social, economic, political, and scientific forces that shape our world are integral components of a liberal arts education and necessary for effective leadership on local, national, and international levels.

Our students embrace education abroad—three-quarters of the student body travel abroad for research, service, work or internship opportunities.

Davidson sponsors multiple study abroad programs in addition to the more than 100 academic programs that are operated by partner programs around the world. In the last few years sociology students have conducted courses of study that align broadly with their interests in a variety of countries, including: Argentina, Brazil, China, Denmark, Ghana, India, Italy, South Africa, Sweden, and the UK. Through these and other study abroad programs, students have the opportunity to learn about sociology in a customized setting of choice that brings together their interests in particular languages and cultures, or in the historical, political or social milieu that form a living context for their education.

Davidson in Ghana

During the Summer in Ghana Program, students reside and take classes in Cape Coast, a major city rich with commercial, educational, and cultural activities. As one of Africa's most beautiful and progressive countries, Ghana is a democracy with a multiparty political system.

As a participant in the program, you visit the site of two important slave castles, the largest virgin rain forest in the country, and are immersed in modern and traditional Ghanaian life.

This program includes two course credits on Ghanaian society and culture and performing arts, a service project, and excursions into other regions of Ghana. Ghanaian professors and artists teach all classes. To ensure that you get a feel for Ghanaian life, you will be living in a comfortable guesthouse close to the University of Cape Coast and downtown Cape Coast.

Visit the Office of Education Abroad for information about opportunities for work, service and research abroad.
