Education Abroad
The Anthropology Department sponsors the Davidson in Ghana Summer Program, which provides students with the opportunity to learn about the social, historical, and political aspects of West African societies.
Archaeological fieldwork is ongoing in Yucatan, Mexico, as are studies of contemporary Chinese society. In addition, students may participate in Davidson-sponsored study abroad programs in South America and Europe.
Davidson in Ghana
Over a period of four weeks, participants in the Davidson in Ghana summer program will be immersed in both contemporary and traditional Ghanaian life. Based in Legon, a suburb of the capital city Accra, students will live in homestays with local families. The program includes two experiential learning day trips, and two weekend excursions into other parts of the country. All students take one course on Ghanaian culture and society, which fulfills the Social-Scientific Thought (SSRQ) Ways of Knowing requirement, as well as major requirements for Anthropology and Africana Studies. A Davidson faculty member teaches the course, which includes guest lectures by Ghanaian professors and artists.

My advice for students considering this program is simple: yes, there are so many abroad programs to consider and so many wonderful adventures to be had around the world, but the Davidson in Ghana program is truly so unique and so unbelievably rewarding. I think it is also so important to consider where you decide to travel when stepping outside of the Davidson bubble, and what spaces might allow you to reckon with the complexities of things like identity, privilege, culture, and more - all of which we spend so much time discussing in class at Davidson.

How to Apply
All students planning to study abroad must meet with an advisor in the Office of Education Abroad & Away in order to start an application. All application materials, including transcripts, recommendations and other supporting documents, must be submitted by the appropriate deadline.
Students applying to approved non-Davidson partner programs must complete both a Davidson application through the Office of Education Abroad and an application directly with the partner (third-party) organization facilitating the study abroad program.
Apply by February 1 for fall semester, academic year, or summer programs, and by September 15 for spring semester or winter break programs (a few programs may have different deadlines). Contact an Education Abroad advisor with any questions, or email edabroad@davidson.edu.
