My primary research interests involve theory and method in religious studies, as well as substantive topics at the intersections of religion and philosophy, such as mysticism, the relationship between science and religion, and ethics and religion.
Rebeca Fernández (Multilingual Student Writing Coordinator)
My areas of interest include English for specific purposes, computer assisted language learning, teacher education, writing in the disciplines, and bilingual language and literacy acquisition.
Van E. Hillard (Director)
I have taught in the fields of Rhetoric and Writing Studies for the past 30 years, 16 of them spent at Duke University, where I directed the university Writing Program. My interests include visual rhetorics, deliberative writing, and the operations of public memory. I have published essays on civic rhetoric, U.S. literacy education, and public memorials.
I have taught a broad range of courses in moral and political philosophy, including courses in bioemedical ethics, the philosophy of race and gender, the philosophy of law, and ethics and economics. I am particularly interested in using philosophical exploration as an opportunity to practice good writing and reading habits.
My research interests center on poetry and poetics from the 19th century to the present, and I maintain both a critical and a creative research practice. I am also a poet and letterpress printer, and in these capacities my work considers the relationship between text and materiality—especially in the increasingly digital 21st century.
I support multiple departments and associated programs with daily operations and logistics, event planning, marketing, office management, and general administration.
