I have taught in the fields of Rhetoric and Writing Studies for the past 30 years, 16 of them spent at Duke University, where I directed the university Writing Program. My interests include visual rhetorics, deliberative writing, and the operations of public memory. I have published essays on civic rhetoric, U.S. literacy education, and public memorials.

I have taught a broad range of courses in moral and political philosophy, including courses in bioemedical ethics, the philosophy of race and gender, the philosophy of law, and ethics and economics. I am particularly interested in using philosophical exploration as an opportunity to practice good writing and reading habits.

I am also a poet and letterpress printer, and in these capacities my work considers the relationship between text and materiality—especially in the increasingly digital 21st century.
