A select student-led 12-member ensemble, Collegium Musicum Early Music Group draws from Davidson College Chorale in the Music Department.

Collegium specializes in music of the late Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque. In collaboration with the director of choral activities, students who participate in Collegium Musicum are provided opportunities in service through semester concerts, and leadership through rehearsal direction, sectional instruction, ensemble administration, event planning, rehearsal accompanying, rehearsal conducting, and choral composition.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals are determined the second or third week of classes once the group has been auditioned and finalized, and after students are more certain of their other schedule commitments.

Auditions

Auditions are a part of the regular Davidson College Choirs auditions held during the first week of classes. Student-led call backs occur the second week of classes and the roster is typically finalized the second week of classes. Learn more about audition sign up and the audition process.

Performances

Past performances have included a collaborative concert with professional early music ensemble L’Academie du Roi Soleil, Davidson’s annual Joy of Singing Concert featuring Collegium, After Hours Vocal Jazz, and Davidson Singers, and various additional campus and community performances.

Collegium Musicum & After Hours Vocal Jazz

Intellectual inquiry is the backbone of Davidson College. Therefore, it is no surprise that from the premier choral ensemble would arise dedicated leaders who strive to know more about the artistry and discipline of specific genres of choral music, and who choose to meet together on their own time every week to rehearse, study, and perform the art they have come to know and love. Collegium Musicum is a student-led early music ensemble that specializes in the music of the Renaissance and Baroque. The ensemble presents its own performances each year and performs regularly in the community at various civic and liturgical functions.

Likewise, After Hours Vocal Jazz is a student-led vocal jazz ensemble. After Hours has already enjoyed performances at several campus venues, including a masterclass with jazz sensation Aubrey Logan, regular performances with the Davidson College Jazz Ensemble, and an annual presentation at the popular “Live Thursday” event on the campus. Members of these student-led ensembles serve as the section leaders of the Davidson College Chorale, and as such provide a strong support base for the continued growth and development of the musical arts — specifically choral art — at Davidson College.
