Training

Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) offers online and classroom training as needed to comply with local, state and federal regulatory requirements.

This training is summarized in the EHS Training Matrix listed below. Please carefully consider current and future job duties to determine proper training requirements. Some training courses are required, others may be optional.

  • Online training: clicking the course title will launch the web-based training module. You will be asked to complete a brief registration form. The key is the three-digit code listed below the course title. Follow the registration instructions received via your preferred email account.
  • Classroom training: clicking the course title will generate an email to request enrollment.

Bloodborne Pathogens

Exposed to blood or other bodily fluids

Chemical Hygiene Plan

Exposure to chemicals and other hazards in science laboratories

Initial training required with refresher as needed; classroom and online instruction; one and one-half hour duration. For classroom instruction, email alstowe@davidson.edu.

Confined Space Entry

Key: 333

Work in spaces that has limited/restricted means of entry or exit and are not designed for continuous employee occupancy such as communications vaults, manholes or excavations

Initial training required with refresher as needed; online instruction; one-hour duration

CPR/AED/First Aid

Provide emergency assistance with CPR, AED and First Aid. Not intended for professional emergency responders as EMTs, firefighters, police

Certification optional with the exception of the Physical Plant Electrical staff. Certification requires training every two years; vendor classroom instruction; eight-hour duration

Required initial training; online instruction; one-hour duration

Electrical Safety - Qualified Persons

Key: 301

Install, maintain, or repair electrical equipment and systems over 50 volts

Initial training required with refresher every three years; online instruction; one-hour duration. Additional specialized classroom training, such as arc flash protection, will be offered every three years or as needed.

Fall Protection: Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls

Key: 223

Exposure to slip, trip and fall (unguarded surface more than six feet off the ground) hazards

Initial training required with refresher as needed; online instruction; one-hour duration

Fire Extinguisher (Portable)

Key: 101

Personnel designated to use firefighting equipment. Familiarize employees with the general principles of fire extinguisher use

Required annually; online instruction; one-hour duration

Fork Lift (Powered Industrial Truck)

Fork lift operators

Initial training required with refresher as needed; driving test every three years; classroom instruction; one-hour duration

Hand and Power Tools

Work with hand and power tools such as wrenches, pliers, portable saws, power drills

Hazard Communication GHS

Users of hazardous chemicals or potential exposure outside of a laboratory environment

Hazardous Materials (DOT)

Involved in the transportation of DOT hazardous materials (shipping papers, package marking, labeling, placarding)

Initial and refresher training every three years; vendor classroom instruction; 16-hour duration

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Any person who is required to utilize PPE per job hazard analysis

Ladder Safety

Utilize fixed or portable ladders

Optional online instruction; one-hour duration

Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)

Work on immobile, energized equipment/machinery such as steam lines or electrical panels

Initial training required with refresher as needed; online instruction; one-hour duration

Noise Exposure/

Hearing Protection

Exposure to high noise levels for a prolonged period (greater than or equal to a time weighted average of 85 decibels) such as a lawnmower or leaf blower

Required annually, hearing test included; classroom instruction; one-hour duration

Respiratory Protection

Exposure to harmful dusts, fogs, mists, gases, smokes, sprays or vapors. Required by job function to wear a respirator

Required annually; classroom instruction; four-hour duration

Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plan (SPCC)

Key: 123

Handle oil (and byproducts, including gasoline and diesel fuel) bearing equipment and/or oil, particularly in containers with a capacity of less than or equal to 1,320 gallons (containers less than or equal to 55 gallons are exempted)

Required annually or whenever a significant change to plan is made; online instruction; one-hour duration

Universal Waste

Management of universal wastes—recycling of batteries and lighting waste
