Interested in exploring the outdoors for the first time? Are you an outdoor enthusiast? Davidson Outdoors offers a wide variety of outdoor activities, events and courses throughout the year to Davidson students, faculty and staff.

Weekend trips are student run and include everything from relaxing day hikes to multiday paddling, climbing or backpacking adventures! Break trips vary from year to year, but a common favorite is canoeing in the Florida Everglades.

Davidson Outdoors also offers weekly kayak rolling lessons, daily indoor bouldering, and group initiatives programming on and off of the challenge course. Student trip leaders are trained and supervised by Davidson Outdoors staff through a variety of workshops and semester to yearlong courses in various outdoor activities and leadership skills.

Challenge Course

Nestled in the woods beyond the college's cross-country trails, our challenge course is designed for groups who want to get to know one another better, increase trust, improve group problem solving, foster better communication skills and expand creative thinking.

We offer programs on both our high and low course elements. Our high course includes an Alpine Tower that allows participants to climb using harnesses and ropes and support one another from the ground. Our low course consists of structures that challenge groups to work together to solve problems and reach goals through both physical and mental challenge. We have an 8 person minimum for all groups. High course programs have an 18 person maximum and low course programs have a 24 person maximum.

If you are interested in learning more about the challenge course or scheduling a program, please reach out to Caitlin Reilly (careilly@davidson.edu).

Challenge Course Pricing Structure

  • Davidson College groups: $80 for half day programs, $150 for full day programs.
  • Local groups or community organizations: $25 per person for half day programs, $35 per person for full day programs
  • Corporate groups: $45 per person for half day programs, $55 per person for full day programs

Please note: We charge an additional $50 flat rate for programs that include high course elements.

Indoor Bouldering Wall

Located in the basement of the Alvarez College Union, students can learn and practice what it takes to climb with confidence. Routsetters from Cliffhangers Climbing Gym in Mooresville and student routesetters ensure that there are fun routes for everyone.
