CITI Compliance Training

Davidson College is subscribed to CITI Program Research Ethics and Compliance Training courses.  These courses are much more robust than what we have been able to offer in the past. 

The College has subscribed to the following CITI Program courses:

  • Human Subjects Research (HSIRB)
  • Public Health Research
  • Information Privacy Security
  • Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)
  • Conflicts of Interest (COI)
  • Laboratory Animal Research (IACUC)
  • Modules for our institutional and signatory officials and the Chair of the IRB

These courses are available to all students, faculty, and staff at the College. Some courses may be required for some members of our community in order to maintain the College’s compliance with Federal Regulations regarding research. Students who are required to complete one or more of these courses will be directed by their instructors or another staff member to register for the course/s needed to fulfill their training requirement.

Registration

Visit the CITI website to register for courses.  Select the Register option and search for Davidson College using the Select Your Organization Affiliation text entry box. If you have an account through another institution, you may log in and affiliate your account with Davidson College. Any courses that you have completed under a previous affiliation will transfer to Davidson's records. Please use your legal name and Davidson-issued email address. Once you are registered, you will be able to enroll in any of the courses that you need/want to take.  

Once your registration with CITI is complete, you will be directed to enroll in courses.  For information on which courses are appropriate or relevant to you and your project, scroll to the bottom of this page. On the enrollment page, for courses you do not need to enroll in, you may select "Not at this time," "I am not required to complete this course;" if there is no "Not at this time" option, do not select any boxes.

The courses are made up of modules. You may complete a single module at a time and you may repeat any module until you complete the course. Once you complete a course, we recommend printing or storing an electronic copy of your course certificate. You will be able to revisit completed modules or take elective/optional modules after you have received your certificate. 

After your initial registration, you will login using the "Login Through my Institution" tab, select Davidson College and use your Davidson credentials to sign in.

Students

If a specific module or certificate is required for a course or work in a lab, your instructor, PI, or a staff member will advise you which courses to add to your course list. 

Faculty

If you are requiring completion of a course for a class, we recommend asking your students to send you an electronic copy of their completion certificates. If training is required for federal compliance (i.e., you have a federally funded external grant), a PDF of the certificates should be sent to The Office of Sponsored Programs.

Certification Expiration and Refresher Training

Each certificate is good for a period of three to four years; the exact expiration date depends on the course taken and will be noted on the certificate. Researchers and staff who continue to be engaged in research or areas related to research at Davidson must take the refresher courses after their most recent CITI certificate has expired to maintain their certification.

Course Enrollment

Once you have registered with CITI Program, course enrollment is accomplished by answering the following six questions. For each set of courses, choose one learner group below based on your role and the type of research or activities you will conduct. If the question is not related to the course you need/want to take, answer "no" or "not at this time". Students who must complete a certificate to participate in a class or lab project will be advised which learner group to choose by their instructor, lab manager, or another staff member.

Question 1: Human Subjects Research - Basic

This course is appropriate for faculty, staff, and students doing or supervising work related to human subjects research.

The Group 1: Social-Behavioral-Educational Researchers certificate satisfies the federal requirement for Human Subjects Research Training. 

Those who have taken previous iterations of Human Subjects Research training offered at Davidson will note that this course covers a wider scope of material than our prior training. We are pleased to be able to offer this robust training to best prepare our students, faculty, and staff for their work with human subjects.

Choose one learner group:

  • Group 1: Social-Behavioral-Educational Researchers
    • Choose this group to satisfy CITI training requirements for Investigators (students, faculty, and staff) and staff involved primarily in Social and Behavioral research with human subjects. 
    • Faculty Sponsors are required to take this training before their students may begin data collection.
    • This certificate satisfies the federal requirement for Human Subjects Research Training.  
  • Group 2: Research Administrators and Staff
    • Choose this group if you are a staff or administrator working in areas related to external funding of human subjects research.
    • This certificate satisfies the federal requirement for Human Subjects Research Training.  
  • Group 3: IRB Members
    • This Basic Course is appropriate for IRB Committee members. 
    • This is an expanded version of the Group 1/Group 7 learner groups.  
      • Students or faculty who have an active Group 3 IRB Members certificate have satisfied the Group 1 Social Behavioral Research Investigators requirement and the Group 7 Social Behavioral Methods Students requirement.
      • Students or faculty members of the HSIRB who have an active Group 1/Group 7 certificate must register for the Group 3 course and complete the modules not already completed for the Group 1/Group 7 certificate; modules taken for the Group 1/Group 7 certificates do not need to be repeated if the Group 1/Group 7 certificate is still valid.
  • Group 4: IRB Community Members
    • This course is suitable for community members who sit on Davidson’s IRB.
  • Group 5: Center for Civic Engagement
    • This course is suitable for individuals working in the Center for Civic Engagement.  
    • NOTE: This certificate does not satisfy the federal requirement for Human Subjects Research Training
  • Group 6: NIH Funded Faculty
    • Faculty who have received grants from the NIH must take this course to satisfy the NIH Grants Policy Statement.
  • Group 7: Social Behavioral Methods Students
    • Students in social behavioral methods courses that require training before completing a class project. 
    • This is an abbreviated version of the Group 1 learner group.  Students who have an active Group 1 Social & Behavioral Research Investigators certificate have satisfied the Group 7 Social Behavioral Methods Students requirement.
    • NOTE: This certificate does not satisfy the federal requirement for Human Subjects Research Training

Question 2: Institutional/Signatory Officials & IRB Chair

This course is suitable only for the Institutional/Signatory Official and the Chair of the IRB.

Question 3: Public Health Research

This course is suitable for individuals involved in public health research.

Question 4: Information Privacy Security

This course DOES NOT satisfy the federal requirement for Human Subjects Research Training but is recommended for students, faculty, and staff working in human subjects labs or involved in human subjects oversight (Groups 1-3) or with student records (Groups 4-5).  Though this course is not required by law before conducting human subjects research, faculty may require this material for students in their social-behavioral methods classes and, if they choose to do so, should instruct their students to register for Group 2.

  • Group 1: Researchers (IPS)
    • Chose this course if you are involved in human subject research outside the classroom environment (e.g., Principal Investigators, Postdoctoral Fellows, lab staff)
  • Group 2: Students and Instructors
    • Choose this course if you are involved in instructing a class related to human subject research (as a faculty member, lab manager, etc.) or are a student who has been instructed to enroll in this course in order to complete a class project
  • Group 3: Research Administrators, HSIRB Members, and Staff
    • Choose this course if you are a research administrator, HSIRB member, or another staff member in a department that conducts human subject research
  • Group 4: Registrar and Registrar Office Staff
    • This course is suitable for members of the Registrar’s office
  • Group 5: Work-Study Students
    • This course is suitable for work study students working in areas in which they may encounter sensitive information about students, faculty, or staff
  • Not at this time

Question 5: Responsible Conduct of Research

This course satisfies the federal requirement for Responsible Conduct of Research for Principal Investigators, undergraduate students, and post-doctoral researchers. 

Please note that this course does not satisfy the federal requirement for Human Subjects Research Training.

    • This course is suitable for students, faculty, and staff engaged in the natural sciences not involving human subjects research
  • Group 2: Research Administrators and Staff
  • Group 3: Social, Behavioral, and Education (SBE) Sciences
    • This course is suitable for students, faculty, and staff engaged in natural or social science involving human subjects research
  • Group 4: Other Federally Funded Research
    • This course is suitable for all students, faculty, or staff engaged in research in the humanities or other research areas not under the umbrellas of the natural sciences or social sciences involving human subjects research
  • Not at this time.

Question 6: Conflicts of Interest (COI)

This course is suitable for individuals involved in seeking and applying for federally funded research, administrators involved in the pre-award or post-award process, as well as Institutional Administrators (e.g., signatory officials).

    • This course is suitable for students, faculty and staff engaged in federally funded research.
  • Group 2: Research Administrators and Staff
  • Group 3: Institutional Administrators

Question 7: Laboratory Animal Research

These courses are suitable for students, faculty, and staff involved in research involving animal subjects and caring for research animals.
