To meet the needs of the college and the department, it is sometimes necessary that a supervisor request an employee to work beyond the normally scheduled work week. Davidson College compensates all non-exempt staff members for hours worked in excess of 40 during the workweek at one and one half times the normal hourly rate of pay. This is in compliance with federal and state law.
- Overtime should only be worked when approved by the direct supervisor, except in emergency situations.
- Approved paid leaves are not considered actual hours worked and are not counted toward the accumulation of 40 hours for purposes of overtime. This includes, but is not limited to, vacation leave, sick leave, holiday leave, jury duty, bereavement leave and FMLA leave.
- The law does not allow averaging time or carrying overtime hours to the following week.
