Meet The Chaplains

Davidson's chaplaincy addresses a broad range of spiritual needs and fosters all manner of religious expression and inquiry at the college. The chaplains are available to all members of the college community from any religious tradition or secular background, for pastoral counseling, spiritual direction, and program planning. The Chaplains' Office is located on the fourth floor of the Alvarez College Union, next to the elevator.

Rob Spach

Rob Spach is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA). A graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary, he came to Davidson as Chaplain in 1993. His interests include the practice of centering prayer, the history of Christian thought, and wisdom traditions of various world religions. He is married and has two grown children.

The Rev. Grace Burford, Ph.D.

Grace Burford holds a doctorate from Northwestern University in the history and literature of religions. A practicing Buddhist for 40 years, in 2016 she completed her chaplaincy training and was ordained into Buddhist ministry. In addition to providing a Buddhist presence on campus, Burford helps integrate meditative and mindfulness practices into the college community and coordinates a variety of interfaith programs.

Scott Salvato

Scott Salvato has an M.A. in theology and an M.A. in history from St. John's University in New York. He has taught theology and history and had a long career as a rugby player and coach. He is married with four children.

Michael Shields

Michael Shields serves as the rabbi of the Temple Kol Tikvah (Reform) in Davidson. He received his M.A. in Hebrew Literature, M.A. in Religious Education, and Rabbinical Ordination at Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion. His interests include social action, connecting Judaism with the outdoors, music, and the search for meaning in the modern world.

Linda Gurley

Linda Gurley

Linda Gurley is a native of Davidson and has been with the college since 1987. She has worked in the Chaplains' Office for more than 25 years.
