As a resident of the college community, you must abide by all rules and regulations outlined in the Residence Life Policies and Procedures. Be sure to familiarize yourself with proper check-out procedures before leaving for winter and summer breaks, as outlined below.

As in the past, move-in/move-out protocols, including dates and procedures, are based on the college's COVID guidelines, which are subject to change depending on the circumstances in our community and the state.

May Move-Out 2024

As you prepare for the end of the spring 2024 semester, here is some useful information to aid in your transition out of the residential community.

Closing Dates

  • Thursday, May 9, 2024 by 5 p.m. - All students not participating in or attending commencement are required to depart campus.
  • Sunday, May 12, 2024 by 5 p.m. - All non-graduates are required to depart campus.
  • Monday, May 13, 2024 by 12 p.m. - All graduates are required to depart campus.

A late departure fee of up to $250 will be charged to anyone failing to move out on time as stated above unless approved by RLO for late departure.

Official Closing Process

All residents must come to RLO to complete the checkout process. Once your room has been cleaned, belongings removed, and the room door has been locked, you must come to RLO to return your room keys. Residents have 24 hours access to RLO via their CatCard from May 3, 2024 until May 13, 2024. At RLO, residents will sign their keycard and return their room key(s). Residents who lost their room key(s) must signify this on the keycard and will be assessed a lock re-core charge $60.00. Residents cannot complete the check-out process for other students (e.g., return room key for a friend or roommate).

Cleaning Space and Removing Trash

Residents must clean their rooms/suites/apartments before leaving. Please check your room thoroughly for any items before checkout to ensure you have all your personal belongings. The cleanliness of the rooms is the resident’s responsibility regardless of the presence or availability of shared resources (e.g. hall vacuums, or brooms). Before departure, make sure to check the laundry room, kitchens, and bathrooms for any personal items.

Items Left Behind will be Discarded

After residents move out, RLO in consultation with Physical Plant staff will assess damages that occurred in the residential spaces during the current academic year to determine which damages (if any) warrant charges. Outside of normal wear and tear, any damage charges go to those responsible residents- often the residents of the room or the identified responsible person. The reason for the assessment is to address any concerns in the effort to maintain the residence halls and apartments in good condition. Residents will be charged for missing college provided furniture that was not reported back in August on the RLO Room Condition Report.

Preparing for Move-Out? Consider Donating Select Items to ISP & Lula Bell’s!

International Student Programs (ISP) and Lula Bell’s Resource Center will be collecting select items during move-out week in May to repurpose for incoming and returning students this fall. If you are a student moving out this spring and have personal items such as minifridges, microwaves, business or winter clothing, plastic storage containers, lamps, hangers, kitchen equipment, unused school supplies, etc. that are still in good condition, please consider donating them for future students to use. Donations will be prioritized for international students traveling from abroad and incoming high-need students. If you are eager to assist with the donation collection, please sign up to volunteer.

ISP & Lula Bell’s will be collecting select donations at the following locations & times:

  • Wednesday, May 8 from 1-5 p.m.: Chidsey, Sentelle
  • Thursday, May 9 from 1-5 p.m.: Chidsey, Sentelle
  • Sunday, May 12 from 1-5 p.m.: Ryburn
  • Monday, May 13 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.: Ryburn

For students that have donations outside of the approved donation items list, they are encouraged to donate to local organizations such as Habitat for Humanity (furniture), Lydia’s Loft (clothing), and Goodwill (assorted items). Questions? Contact Sayre Weir at saweir@davidson.edu.

Late Departure Requests

If you are participating in graduation (non-graduates), attending graduation, or leaving late due to travel concerns and may need to remain on campus until May 12, 2024 at 5 p.m., please fill out the form. The application will close May 1st, 2024 at 5pm. Filing out this form does not mean you are automatically permitted to stay. All submissions will be reviewed by the Residence Life Office. Once reviewed, you will receive a response from RLO with details regarding your submission. Graduating seniors do not need to fill out the form.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Residence Life at rlo@davidson.edu or to Associate Director Charlene Kilpatrick at chkilpatrick@davidson.edu.

Conduct and Behavior

Residents must abide by all policies, including the Alcohol Policy, Code of Responsibility, Honor Code, and RLO policies.  Students failing to abide by the above policies during this period will be required to vacate their rooms immediately.

Construction Projects

It is important to know that all the check-out deadlines are firm; the College has construction projects, building cleaning, and summer conference schedules built around them.  We strongly encourage all residents to plan and pack-up belongings early to make move-out deadlines.
