Abernethy Grants

Robert J. Abernethy established a funded summer internship program for Davidson College students at the Atlantic Council and Truman National Security Project. The program aims to provide students with meaningful experiences working in–and contributing to–the policy think tanks.

Each qualified student intern will receive a grant of $4,000 ($2,000 before beginning the internship, and an additional $2,000 after the internship concludes), provided the following conditions are met.

  • The student will achieve sophomore or junior standing by September 2018.  Current sophomores must be participating in the Davidson in Washington program to be eligible for this grant.  All juniors are eligible.
  • The internship lasts for a minimum of 10 calendar weeks.
  • The internship shall conclude on or before Oct. 1, 2018.
  • The intern will work primarily at the headquarters of the Atlantic Council or Truman National Security Project in Washington, D.C.
  • The intern will observe the mission of the Atlantic Council or Truman National Security Project.

How to Apply

You must apply for internship positions at either organization through Handshake (login required). Each organization reviews applications, interviews and selects its own interns.

The application period opens in mid-January. Once you are placed with either organization, the Center for Career Development will contact you to finalize details regarding the internship grant.

Acceptance of an Abernethy Grant is, in turn, acceptance of the Davidson Honor Code. If any infractions are suspected, the student risks forfeiture of part or all of the award, and Honor Code charges.
