Historic Quad
The historic area of campus includes Eumenean (Eu) Hall, Philanthropic (Phi) Hall, Elm Row and Oak Row.
Elm and Oak were built in 1836 as dormitories for students and are among the oldest buildings on campus. They have served as an infirmary, a fraternity, student organization offices and home of the Music and Art Departments.
Eu and Phi Halls were constructed in 1849 and 1850 respectively, and are named for the first two student societies founded at the college, both of which still meet today. During presidential election years, college democrats and republicans debate the issues of the election from the Eu and Phi balconies.
All four buildings were placed on the National Historic Register in 1977.
