Deliberation & Free Expression
The Deliberation & Free Expression program area builds on Davidson’s longstanding commitment to dialogue across differences and the liberal arts tradition of free expression. It serves as a hub for initiatives that prepare students to lead thoughtfully in an increasingly polarized world.
The program emphasizes civil discourse, respectful listening, and the ability to engage across political, cultural, and ideological divides. Students also develop critical skills in evaluating information, assessing the credibility of sources, and constructing well-reasoned arguments—equipping them to participate meaningfully in public dialogue and democratic life.
The Deliberative Citizenship Initiative creates opportunities for Davidson students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the wider community to productively engage with one another on difficult and contentious issues facing our community and society.
Davidson College is developing a campus-wide action plan to ensure every student has the opportunity to develop the capacity for civil discourse, collaborative problem-solving, and critical engagement with information. This effort is part of the Campus-Wide Immersion (CWI) Initiative, supported by the College Presidents for Civic Preparedness—a national consortium convened by the Institute for Citizens & Scholars.
Through this partnership, Davidson is creating a culture where all students are prepared to engage in a diverse, dynamic, and sometimes contentious society while upholding the principles of free inquiry and democratic engagement.
The Dueling Scholars program engages leaders with differing viewpoints or traditions to work together and with students to develop solution to pressing issues.
