Davidson College recognizes that naming practices reflect the history, tradition, and values of our institution. In 2020 the Commission on Race and Slavery released its report stating that building names on campus should be thoroughly examined in acknowledging and confronting our history.

In 2020, the Board of Trustees formed a committee on Acknowledgment and Naming in response to the Report of the Commission on Race and Slavery. The committee sought the feedback of the college community in preparing a policy that was approved by the Board of Trustees in 2022.
